About

Native to Southeast Asia, Limnophila hippuridoides is one of those background plants that can genuinely stop you mid-scroll when it's thriving. The leaves are finely serrated and arranged in whorls along the stem, giving it a feathery, almost delicate look at first glance. Under high light with good nutrients, the foliage shifts from olive-green to a rich purple-red that deepens toward the tips. That color contrast against bright greens like Rotala or Ludwigia makes it a popular choice for Dutch-style layouts and nature aquariums alike.

It grows at a moderate pace, so it won't dominate the tank overnight, but regular trimming keeps it dense and encourages lateral shoots for propagation. Just snip a healthy stem and replant it into the substrate.

CO2 injection isn't strictly required, but without it the coloration tends to stay muted and growth slows considerably. It roots best in a nutrient-rich substrate rather than plain sand or gravel.

If you want to see what this plant looks like fully saturated in color, browsing planted tank communities for user-submitted journal photos is genuinely worth your time.

Care Notes

The biggest mistake people make is expecting strong color in low or medium light setups. Without high light and either CO2 or heavy liquid carbon dosing, the purple-red coloration barely develops. Iron-rich fertilization helps a lot. Don't plant stems too close together or the lower leaves will melt from lack of light. Trim regularly to prevent legginess and replant tops to maintain density.
