About

Native to Madagascar, Aponogeton ulvaceus is one of those plants that genuinely stops people in their tracks. It grows from a bulb and produces enormous, ruffled leaves with a translucent quality that lets light pass right through them, giving the whole tank a glowing, layered look. The wavy leaf edges are distinctive and make it easy to identify even in a mixed planted setup.

Under decent lighting it grows aggressively fast, sometimes pushing out a new leaf every few days when it's happy. Drop the bulb into a nutrient-rich substrate and it pretty much does the rest. Background placement is the obvious call given how large it gets, and a single specimen can fill a 60cm tank from corner to corner.

Propagation happens through daughter bulbs or seeds, though getting it to flower and set seed requires patience. The main quirk is dormancy. After a growth spurt the plant may yellow and die back, which looks alarming but usually just means the bulb is resting.

Browsing planted tank builds featuring this species is a great way to appreciate just how dramatic it looks in a well-lit aquascape.

Care Notes

The biggest mistake is panicking when it goes dormant and throwing the bulb away. Let it rest in the substrate or in a container of water for a few weeks and it'll bounce back. Plant the bulb so only the bottom half is buried. A nutrient-rich substrate really does make a difference here. CO2 isn't required but noticeably speeds growth and keeps the leaves looking their best.
