About

Kleiner Bar is a cultivated hybrid of the Echinodorus genus, bred specifically to stay compact where standard Amazon Swords would quickly dominate a tank. It tops out around 20 to 25 cm, making it a genuinely useful midground plant rather than a background monster in disguise.

The leaves are a rich, deep green with a slightly glossy texture, and new growth often emerges with a warm reddish or bronze tint that fades as the leaf matures. That color contrast looks great in a well-lit setup. It grows as a rosette from a central crown, so spacing matters. Give it room to spread sideways rather than crowding it against other plants.

Care is straightforward. Medium lighting gets decent results, CO2 isn't required but does noticeably speed things up and improves leaf quality. Root tabs are the real key here since this plant pulls most of its nutrients through the roots rather than the water column.

Propagation happens through adventitious plantlets that emerge on runner-like stems. Once a daughter plant has a few leaves and visible roots, you can trim it free and replant it.

Searching community tank journals with this plant alongside rasboras or dwarf cichlids shows how well it anchors a natural-looking midground.

Care Notes

Root tabs every 3 to 4 months are more important than CO2 for this plant. The biggest failure mode is planting it in plain inert gravel with no nutrient source and wondering why it melts back. Avoid planting the crown too deep since burying it causes rot. Old leaves yellow and die off periodically, which is normal. Trim them at the base rather than leaving stumps.
