About
Native to southern Europe and Asia, Vallisneria spiralis has been a staple of the planted tank hobby for over a century, and for good reason. Long, ribbon-like leaves twist gently in the current and can reach the water surface in surprisingly little time, creating that lush, flowing background that makes a tank look alive even without CO2 or fancy lighting.
It thrives in harder, alkaline water, which makes it a natural fit for African cichlid setups and community tanks with liquid rock tap water. In soft, acidic conditions it tends to struggle, growing slowly or melting back.
It spreads through runners, sending out daughter plants along the substrate that you can either leave to form a dense colony or snip and replant elsewhere. One hard rule: keep it away from liquid carbon products like Excel or glutaraldehyde-based additives. Even small doses can cause rapid melt, and it often doesn't recover.
A nutrient-rich substrate helps it grow faster, but it'll manage in plain gravel with a bit of root tab support. Look up community tank builds featuring this plant and you'll see why it keeps showing up decade after decade.

Care Notes
The biggest killer is glutaraldehyde-based liquid carbon, which causes rapid irreversible melt even at low doses. Avoid it entirely. Soft, acidic water slows growth and causes yellowing. Root tabs help significantly in inert substrates. Leaves can go very long and shade lower plants, so trim them by cutting across the leaf rather than pulling, which disturbs runners.
