About

Native to Sri Lanka, Cryptocoryne undulata is one of the more forgiving members of a genus that has a reputation for being finicky. The leaves come in shades of green to bronze-brown, often with a subtle reddish tint depending on light intensity, and have that characteristic wavy, crinkled edge that gives crypts their distinctive look. Plants typically reach somewhere between 15 and 25 cm tall, making them a natural fit tucked into the midground of most layouts.

Growth is slow, but once established, a healthy plant will quietly send out runners and expand into a modest cluster over several months. It handles low light well, which makes it compatible with a wide range of tank setups, though a bit more light will bring out the deeper bronze coloration. CO2 isn't required but does speed things along noticeably.

Like most crypts, it's not fond of being moved and may go through a dramatic melt when first introduced or after a significant water change. Don't panic and pull it out, new leaves almost always follow.

Care Notes

Crypt melt is the biggest surprise for beginners. If leaves dissolve after planting, leave the roots in the substrate and wait. Resist the urge to replant or move it. Nutrient-rich substrate makes a real difference for long-term health since most feeding happens through the roots. Don't skip fertilization entirely, even in low-tech tanks. Moving an established plant resets the clock.
