About

Blood Red SG is a variant of Rotala collected from Singapore, and it's become something of a benchmark for how intensely red an aquarium stem plant can actually get. The leaves are small and narrow, arranged in whorls along slender stems, and under the right conditions they turn a deep, almost alarming crimson from tip to substrate.

Getting there is the challenge. It demands high light, injected CO2, and a lean nutrient profile, particularly low nitrates, since excess nitrogen pushes the plant toward green. Many hobbyists run EI dosing at reduced levels or use estimative index with heavy water changes to keep nitrates in check. It grows at a moderate pace, which gives you more control than faster reds but also means mistakes linger longer.

Plant it in tight groups toward the back or sides of the layout for maximum visual impact. Propagation is straightforward, just trim and replant the tops, and the cut stems will branch and fill in nicely over time.

Browsing builds where this plant has been dialed in is genuinely inspiring, the contrast against green foreground plants is striking.

Care Notes

The most common failure is too many nitrates, which kills the red coloration fast and leaves you with green stems that look nothing like the photos. Don't skip CO2. Light needs to be genuinely high, not just medium-high. Soft, low to moderate hardness water suits it best, and hard alkaline water tends to cause poor coloration and slow decline. Replant tops regularly to keep the lower stems from becoming bare and leggy.
