About

Native to fast-moving rivers and streams across tropical West and Central Africa, Bolbitis heudelotii is one of the most striking aquatic ferns you can keep. Its deeply lobed, almost skeletal leaves have a translucent quality that catches light in a way few other plants can match, giving it an otherworldly appearance that looks particularly stunning in blackwater or tannin-stained setups.

It attaches to rock, driftwood, or other hardscape via a creeping rhizome, much like Java Fern or Anubias, and should never be buried in substrate. Growth is genuinely slow, so patience is the price of admission here.

CO2 injection isn't strictly required but makes a noticeable difference in growth rate and leaf quality. It does best with moderate water movement, which mimics its natural riverine habitat, and tends to struggle in stagnant, nutrient-poor water.

Propagation is simple: divide the rhizome once it's long enough and attach each piece separately. If you want to see how incredible a mature specimen looks surrounded by driftwood and java moss, hunting down tank build photos from experienced aquascapers is well worth your time.

Care Notes

Never bury the rhizome or it will rot and the plant will die. This is the most common mistake by far. It needs moderate flow around its leaves to thrive, low flow leads to algae coating and slow decline. Soft or acidic water suits it best. Hard alkaline water stunts growth noticeably. CO2 and even modest liquid fertilization will dramatically speed things up compared to running it bare.
