About

Coffeefolia is a cultivated variety of Anubias barteri, and the name basically explains itself once you see those leaves. They're deeply corrugated and ridged in a way that sets them apart from the flat, unremarkable look of standard barteri. The texture genuinely does resemble coffee plant foliage, and new growth comes in with a warm reddish-bronze tint before settling into a deep, glossy green. It sits between Anubias nana and full barteri in terms of size, so it fills midground space nicely without overwhelming a smaller tank.

Like all Anubias, it attaches to hardscape rather than substrate, so tie or glue it to driftwood or rock and let it do its thing. Roots should never be buried or they'll rot.

It's a genuinely slow grower, which means algae on older leaves is a real issue, especially under excess light. Keep lighting on the lower end and let fast-growing stem plants handle the nutrient competition. CO2 won't hurt but is absolutely unnecessary.

Propagation is simple: divide the rhizome with a clean cut, making sure each piece has a few leaves. Search coffeefolia in planted tank communities and you'll find some beautifully aquascaped tanks showing off its texture against smooth stones.

Care Notes

The single biggest mistake is burying the rhizome. Keep it fully exposed or it rots quickly. Algae colonizes older leaves when light is too high or nutrients are unbalanced, and those leaves won't recover once covered. Avoid direct, intense light. If individual leaves go yellow or mushy, trim them close to the rhizome rather than pulling. This plant rewards patience, not intervention.
