About
Myriophyllum is a cosmopolitan genus found across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, with aquarium hobby favorites like M. mattogrossense from Brazil and M. tuberculatum from Southeast Asia each bringing something distinct to a planted tank. What they share is that impossibly fine, feathery foliage, whorls of needle-thin leaves radiating outward from the stem like a bottlebrush in slow motion.
Under good light, M. mattogrossense runs green with reddish tips, while M. tuberculatum can turn a deep brick red that looks almost unreal. Both grow fast when happy, pushing toward the surface quickly and filling background space with soft, layered texture that most other stem plants can't replicate.
They root into substrate but also do reasonably well floating or loosely anchored until they establish. Regular trimming is essential since they'll shade themselves into decline from the bottom up if left unchecked. Trimmings replant easily, so you'll never run short of cuttings.
If you want a planted tank that looks genuinely wild and dense rather than manicured, searching builds that feature Myriophyllum will show you exactly what this genus can do.

Care Notes
The most common mistake is insufficient light. Without high output lighting, the lower stems drop leaves fast and the whole plant becomes a leggy mess. CO2 isn't technically required but dramatically improves color and growth density. Trim frequently and replant tops to keep the stems bushy. Avoid goldfish or other herbivores since the delicate leaves get shredded immediately. Nutrient deficiencies show up first as pale or yellowing lower leaves.
