About
Native to Australia, Vallisneria nana is essentially the manageable sibling of the towering Jungle Val. Where its larger relatives can swamp a mid-sized tank in weeks, Dwarf Val tops out around 20 to 30 cm, making it genuinely useful in the midground without constantly needing a trim. The leaves are narrow, bright green, and grow in that classic rosette form, giving tanks a graceful, grassy look without the chaos.
Care is about as simple as it gets. Decent lighting and a nutrient-rich substrate will keep it spreading steadily via runners, and you'll start seeing new plants pop up around the parent within a few weeks of planting. It's a great choice for planted community tanks where you want natural coverage without high-tech gear. No CO2 injection needed, though it won't refuse it.
Harder water actually suits it better than soft, acidic conditions, so it pairs nicely with livebearers and African cichlid setups on the lower end of that hardness range. Search for it in midground planting layouts alongside cryptocorynes and you'll find some genuinely inspiring combinations.

Care Notes
Newly planted Dwarf Val often melts back before bouncing, so don't pull it prematurely. The biggest failure is soft or inert substrate with no root tabs, since it feeds heavily through its roots. Keep it out of tanks with goldfish, silver dollars, or other dedicated plant-eaters. Very soft acidic water stunts growth noticeably. Trim runners rather than leaving them to crowd out neighbors.
