About

Native to the fast-moving streams and rivers of Borneo, Bucephalandra grows attached to rocks and submerged wood rather than in sediment, which makes it a natural fit for hardscape-focused aquascapes.

What really sets it apart is sheer variety. There are hundreds of named varieties, and depending on which one you get, leaves might be round, lance-shaped, wavy-edged, or deeply textured. Colors range from deep green to blue-green, bronze, and near-black, and many varieties have a subtle iridescence that catches the light in ways that are genuinely hard to photograph.

It's earned the nickname 'the zoanthid of freshwater' for good reason. Popular varieties like Brownie Ghost, Kedayang, and Wavy Green have developed dedicated followings, and collectors trade rare forms the same way reef hobbyists swap corals.

Growth is slow, but it's forgiving about light and doesn't strictly need CO2 injection, which makes it accessible even for low-tech tanks. Tie or glue it to hardscape with the rhizome fully exposed, and it'll gradually creep across the surface.

Browse planted tank communities and you'll quickly fall down a rabbit hole of variety hunting.

Care Notes

Never bury the rhizome in substrate or it will rot. Melting shortly after purchase is common and not fatal, so don't panic and toss it. Growth is genuinely slow, so don't mistake lack of new leaves for failure. Soft water on the lower end of its pH range tends to bring out the best color and iridescence. CO2 isn't required but does accelerate growth noticeably.
