About

Native to India and Sri Lanka, Cryptocoryne spiralis is one of the taller crypts you can grow, with long, narrow leaves that sometimes develop a faint spiral twist along their length. It's not the most dramatic plant in the shop, but give it a few months and it becomes a genuinely impressive background specimen that fills in corners and softens hardscape edges beautifully.

Unlike many crypts that sulk for weeks after planting, spiralis tends to settle in relatively quickly and starts throwing runners once it's happy. Low light is fine, CO2 is completely optional, and it tolerates a wide range of water parameters without complaint.

Nutrient-rich substrate gives it a real boost, but it'll get by in plain gravel with root tabs. Propagation is passive as the runners pop up around the parent plant and can be separated once they've developed their own root system.

It's a solid choice for planted tanks where you want vertical interest without high-tech equipment. Search for community builds featuring spiralis alongside java fern or bolbitis and you'll see just how lush a low-tech tank can look.

Care Notes

Crypt melt is the main pitfall after planting or any major parameter shift. Don't pull the plant. Leave the roots in the substrate and new growth almost always returns. Root tabs make a noticeable difference in growth speed. Avoid replanting frequently since disturbance sets it back significantly. Once established it spreads by runners aggressively, so be ready to prune or rehome plantlets.
