About

Narrow Leaf Java Fern is a cultivar of the classic Microsorum pteropus, native to Southeast Asia, but with much more slender, elongated fronds that give it a totally different visual personality than the standard form. Where regular Java Fern looks broad and chunky, this one has a flowing, almost grass-like elegance that moves beautifully in moderate current. Fronds typically reach 20 to 30 centimeters tall and stay relatively narrow, making it great for creating layered texture in a scape without dominating the midground.

Care is essentially identical to the parent species: tie or glue it to driftwood or rock, keep the rhizome fully exposed, and don't bury it in substrate or it will rot. Light requirements are genuinely low, and CO2 is completely optional. It's slow to establish but once settled it grows steadily and propagates by producing tiny plantlets along the leaf edges.

A row of these tied along a piece of twisted driftwood looks stunning in almost any community setup. Browse planted tank build threads and you'll see this cultivar show up constantly as a midground workhorse.

Care Notes

The single most common mistake is burying the rhizome, which kills the plant within weeks. Attach it to hardscape with thread, fishing line, or cyanoacrylate gel glue. Black spots or plantlets appearing on older leaves are normal propagation, not disease. Growth is slow so don't panic if it looks unchanged for the first month. Melting older fronds after introduction is also common and usually temporary.
