About

Cryptocoryne lucens comes from Sri Lanka, where it grows in shallow, fast-moving streams with good light penetration. In the aquarium it produces narrow, bright green leaves that stay relatively upright, typically reaching somewhere between 10 and 15 centimeters at most. It sits comfortably between C. parva and the mid-sized crypts like C. wendtii, making it genuinely useful for foreground and low midground placement in tanks where you want something with a bit more presence than a carpet plant but nothing that will obscure the rest of the scape.

Care is straightforward. It tolerates low light well, doesn't demand CO2, and will take root in a nutrient-rich substrate without much fuss. Growth is slow even by crypt standards, so patience is non-negotiable.

Propagation happens through runners once the plant is settled in, and a single healthy specimen can slowly spread into a modest colony over several months. It's one of the more melt-resistant crypts, which makes it a good first crypt for anyone burned by C. wendtii turning to mush after a water change.

If you want to see how it looks in real planted tanks before committing, browsing planted tank communities or scaping forums will turn up plenty of examples showing its natural, understated look.

Care Notes

Don't move it around once planted. Crypts punish disturbance with melt, and lucens is better than most but still not immune. Nutrient-rich substrate matters more than water column dosing for this genus. If leaves yellow and go soft after a move or big water change, don't pull it. Leave the roots intact and it'll almost always recover within a few weeks.
