Ludwigia Senegalensis

Native to West Africa, Ludwigia senegalensis is one of the most visually striking stem plants in the hobby, and also one of the most demanding.

The leaves are oval and relatively small, but what makes this plant genuinely special is the patterning: a mosaic of deep red or burgundy spots and streaks scattered across a green or bronze base, almost like a leopard's coat rendered in plant form. No two leaves look quite the same.

Under strong light with CO2 and a rich nutrient column, the contrast between the background color and the spots becomes dramatically vivid. Without those conditions, the patterning fades and the plant tends to melt. Growth is slow even under ideal conditions, so don't expect rapid fills.

It works beautifully as a midground focal point in high-tech scapes, planted in a small cluster where the patterned leaves can be appreciated up close. Propagation is straightforward: trim stem tips and replant, but be patient.
