About

Bucephalandra sp. 'Brownie Ghost' hails from the rainforest streams of Borneo, where it clings to rocks and submerged wood in fast-moving, soft acidic water. What makes this variety stand out is the leaf color, deep olive to near-black with a blue iridescent shimmer that shifts as the light angle changes. Under a decent LED the effect is almost holographic.

Plants stay compact, rarely pushing past 6 to 8 cm tall, which makes them ideal for nano tanks and small foreground or midground accents on hardscape. Growth is genuinely slow, so don't panic if nothing seems to happen for weeks after planting.

Like other Buce varieties, it's rhizome-based and should be tied or glued to rock or driftwood rather than buried in substrate. Burying the rhizome is one of the fastest ways to kill it. CO2 isn't strictly required but you'll notice faster, healthier growth with even low supplementation. Propagation is simple: once the rhizome gets long enough, cut it into sections with at least a few leaves each.

Searching planted tank builds online that feature dark ADA stones or Black Moor rock with Brownie Ghost attached will give you serious inspiration.

Care Notes

Never bury the rhizome in substrate, attach it to hardscape instead. Melting after planting or water changes is common and usually recovers on its own, so resist the urge to toss it. Soft, low-TDS water helps it color up better. Algae on leaves is a common frustration given how slowly new leaves replace old ones, so keep nutrient levels balanced and avoid excess light.
