About

Native to Southeast Asia, Rotala rotundifolia is one of those plants that earns its place in almost every planted tank style. The leaves are small and rounded on lower portions of the stem, becoming narrower and more lance-shaped toward the top as the plant matures.

Under low to medium light it stays a fairly unremarkable green, but bump up the intensity and add CO2 and it transforms into something genuinely striking, flushing pink along the stems and shifting to deep red-orange at the tips. That color response is part of why it's so popular.

Growth is vigorous once established, and stems can reach the surface quickly in a nutrient-rich setup, so regular trimming is part of the routine. The good news is that trimming is also how you propagate it: just replant the cut tops and they root within days.

Dense plantings create a soft, feathery backdrop that works especially well in Dutch-style layouts or as a contrasting filler behind hardscape. If you want to see how dramatically coloration can vary depending on parameters, browsing community tank journals will show you just how different the same plant can look.

Care Notes

The most common mistake is expecting red color without sufficient light and nutrients. CO2 injection isn't strictly required but makes a noticeable difference in both growth speed and color saturation. Without regular trimming, lower leaves lose light and melt away, leaving bare stems. Replanting tops every few weeks keeps the stand looking full. Iron and micronutrient dosing helps maintain the pink and red tones.
