About
Persicaria sp. 'Sao Paulo' is a genuinely rare stem plant that collectors hunt down specifically for its wild patterning. Each leaf carries dark, irregular blotches scattered across a green or reddish-green surface, which is why hobbyists often call it the Leopard Plant. It belongs to the knotweed family and originates from South America, though its exact collection locality remains a bit murky in the hobby.
Under good light and CO2, the coloration deepens noticeably and the spots become more defined. Without CO2, it'll still grow but tends to look washed out and stretches toward the light more aggressively. Growth is moderate at best, so don't expect it to fill in quickly.
It works beautifully in the midground where the leaf patterning can actually be appreciated up close rather than buried behind taller background plants. Trimming the tops and replanting is the standard propagation method. The plant doesn't get enormous, topping out around 40 cm under typical conditions.
If you want to see how this one looks in a real build, searching planted tank forums and journals will turn up some genuinely striking examples of what it can do in a well-maintained aquascape.

Care Notes
Low CO2 is the most common reason this plant underperforms. It won't die without injection but colors stay dull and growth gets leggy. Nutrient deficiencies show up quickly on the patterned leaves, so regular dosing of iron and micros matters more than it might with plain green plants. Avoid very hard or alkaline water. Don't plant it too deep in the substrate or stem rot sets in fast at the base.
