About

Native to India, Hygrophila pinnatifida is one of those plants that genuinely surprises people when they first see it. The deeply lobed, almost feathery leaves sit dark green to olive-brown on top, then flip to a rich purple-maroon underneath, so the color shifts depending on where the light hits. It doesn't look like a typical stem plant, and honestly it doesn't behave like one either.

You can push it into substrate, tie it to a rock or piece of driftwood, or just let a side shoot creep along the hardscape surface. In good conditions with CO2 and decent light, it'll send out runners and horizontal branches that weave through the layout in a really organic way.

Growth is slow to moderate, so don't expect it to fill space quickly. It responds well to CO2 injection and a nutrient-rich substrate, though it can get by without both if you're patient. Pruning is straightforward since cuttings root easily.

If you want to see how versatile it looks across different tank styles, browsing aquascaping build threads is genuinely worthwhile.

Care Notes

The biggest mistake is planting it somewhere and forgetting it. Low flow areas lead to algae buildup on those textured leaves, which is hard to remove. Without CO2 growth slows to almost nothing and the coloration dulls significantly. Attachment to hardscape takes weeks, so don't yank it off to reposition early. Give it moderate to high flow and don't plant too deep into fine substrate.
