About

Native to the rivers and streams of Cameroon, Crinum calamistratum is one of those plants that makes people stop and stare. Its long, dark green leaves spiral and curl as they grow, creating a cascading, almost otherworldly texture that you just don't see in most aquarium plants. Mature specimens can fill a background with flowing ribbons of foliage that sway gently in any current, and there's really nothing else quite like it in the hobby.

It grows from a large bulb, and patience is genuinely required here. New leaves emerge slowly, sometimes one at a time over weeks, but once the plant is established it becomes remarkably resilient. Low light suits it fine, CO2 injection isn't necessary, and it tolerates a wide range of water parameters.

Plant the bulb so the top third stays exposed above the substrate, since burying it completely will cause rot. Propagation happens through offsets that eventually form at the base of the parent bulb.

This one tends to be a statement piece rather than a filler plant, and seeing it in a well-aged biotope or West African setup is genuinely impressive.

Care Notes

The most common mistake is burying the bulb too deep, which almost always leads to rot. Leave the upper portion exposed. Don't panic if growth stalls for months after planting, it's normal while the root system establishes. Avoid trimming leaves down to the base, as the plant relies on each leaf for energy storage. Yellowing lower leaves are expected as the plant matures.
