About

Native to the Indian subcontinent, Water Wisteria has become a staple in planted tanks for good reason. Submersed, it develops deeply lobed, almost feathery leaves that look far more exotic than the care level suggests. Emersed leaves are broader and simpler, so don't be surprised if cuttings from a store look completely different once they settle in and start growing underwater.

It's a genuinely fast grower, capable of reaching the surface in a matter of weeks under decent light, which makes it a powerhouse for soaking up nitrates and outcompeting algae. Plant it in the background in nutrient-rich substrate and it'll take off with minimal fuss. No CO2 is required, though supplementation will push growth and leaf refinement noticeably.

It also floats well, roots dangling freely, which is handy for fry tanks or anything needing extra filtration help. Propagation is as simple as snipping a stem and replanting it. If you're building a lush, low-maintenance planted community, Water Wisteria belongs on your shortlist.

Care Notes

The biggest mistake is planting it in poor substrate and wondering why growth stalls. It feeds heavily through its roots, so a capped soil or root tabs makes a real difference. Trim regularly or it'll shade out everything below. Avoid Very soft, acidic water below pH 6.5 as growth slows noticeably. Floated specimens grow faster initially but tend to shade the rest of the tank quickly.
