About
Native to North and South America, Cabomba caroliniana is one of those plants that looks absolutely stunning in photos and can be genuinely tricky to keep looking that way in your tank. The leaves are finely divided and fan-shaped, arranged in whorls along the stem, giving it that feathery, almost lacey appearance that makes it a popular background choice.
Under good conditions it shoots upward fast, and you'll find yourself trimming it regularly just to keep it in check. The green variety is the most forgiving of the bunch. The red and purple forms, especially C. furcata, want brighter light, CO2, and soft acidic water or they'll slowly melt from the bottom up.
That lower-leaf drop is the classic warning sign something's off, usually not enough light reaching the lower portions of the stem. Plant it in nutrient-rich substrate, give it at least medium-high lighting, and it rewards you with dense, gorgeous columns of green. Propagation is simple: just snip a healthy stem and replant.
If you've seen it thriving in someone's planted tank build, it's almost always paired with a quality light and some form of CO2 supplementation.

Care Notes
The biggest mistake is planting Cabomba under insufficient light and hoping for the best. It will shed lower leaves and look ragged fast. Soft, slightly acidic water is strongly preferred. Hard tap water causes noticeable decline over time. CO2 injection isn't strictly required but makes a real difference in growth quality and stem density. Avoid pairing it with fish that uproot plants or nip soft vegetation.
