About

Native to Central and South America, Red Root Floater is a small floating plant that's become genuinely popular for good reason. Each round leaf sits flat on the water surface, barely reaching a couple centimeters across, and under strong lighting those leaves blush deep red or burgundy while the dangling roots below turn a vivid crimson. It's one of the more visually striking floaters available to hobbyists.

Under lower light the plant stays mostly green, which is perfectly fine functionally, but you lose that signature color pop. Growth can be surprisingly quick once it's settled in, spreading across the surface and offering solid shade for fish and shrimp below. Fry especially seem to love sheltering under the dense mat it forms.

It also pulls nutrients out of the water column at a decent rate, which makes it a practical addition to any tank dealing with algae pressure. If you want to see what it looks like in a real planted setup, searching community tank journals is genuinely worth your time.

Care Notes

Surface agitation is the main killer here. Even moderate ripple from a filter outlet will stress or kill it fairly quickly, so a calm surface is non-negotiable. Hard or alkaline water stunts growth and prevents the red coloration from developing. Trim regularly because a thick mat can block too much light from plants below. Iron supplementation helps maintain intense leaf color.
