About

Red Flame Sword is a cultivated hybrid within the Echinodorus genus, bred specifically for its dramatic coloration. New leaves emerge in deep crimson and burgundy, and as the plant matures those leaves gradually shift toward olive or green, which means the overall look depends heavily on how fast it's pushing out fresh growth. Keep it well fed and you'll always have a flush of red at the crown.

It stays more compact than classic Amazon Swords, typically topping out around 30 to 35 cm, so it fits comfortably as a midground centerpiece without swallowing the whole tank. Like all swords, it's a heavy root feeder and really needs nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tab supplementation to thrive. CO2 isn't strictly required, but even a low-tech injection noticeably speeds up coloration and growth rate.

Propagation happens via adventitious plantlets that sprout along tall runner stems, which you can sever and replant once they've developed a few roots. If you want to see what a well-grown specimen looks like in a real aquascape, browsing community tank journals is genuinely the best way to calibrate your expectations.

Care Notes

The most common mistake is planting this in plain gravel with no root nutrition and wondering why it sulks. Root tabs every 6 to 8 weeks are non-negotiable for consistent red coloration. High nitrates can wash out the red, so balanced fertilization matters more than just dosing more. Avoid planting too deep at the crown, as buried crowns rot quickly. Fish that dig, like cichlids, will uproot it repeatedly.
