About

Native to Southeast Asia and parts of Australia, Pogostemon stellatus 'Octopus' is one of those plants that genuinely stops people mid-scroll when they see it in a well-grown tank. Its long, sinuous leaves radiate outward from each node like outstretched fingers, giving it that tentacle or octopus quality that earned its trade name.

Under intense light and steady CO2, the foliage shifts from green into warm orange and pink tones, which makes it one of the more striking color plants you can grow without relying on red stem species. It's a background plant through and through, and a single stem allowed to grow tall creates real visual drama.

Plant it in groups of five or more stems for the best effect, and trim older stems regularly by cutting and replanting the tops. New side shoots will emerge from the remaining stalk.

You'll want a nutrient-rich substrate and consistent fertilization alongside the CO2, because this plant pulls resources fast. It doesn't belong in a low-tech setup, but in a proper high-tech build it rewards the effort in a way few other stems can.

Search 'Octopus plant aquascape' and prepare to want one immediately.

Care Notes

The most common failure is attempting this plant without injected CO2. It will slowly melt and shed leaves no matter how bright your lights are without it. Supplement with liquid carbon if needed but don't expect the same results. Consistent macro and micro fertilization matters too. Soft, nutrient-poor water tends to stall growth and prevent color development. Trim often to keep lower leaves from dying off in their own shade.
