About

Monte Carlo comes from South America, originally collected in Argentina, and has become one of the most popular carpeting plants in the hobby over the past decade. It produces small, rounded, bright green leaves on creeping stems that spread laterally and hug the substrate, eventually filling in to create that lush lawn effect you see in so many nature-style aquascapes.

Compared to HC Cuba, the leaves are noticeably larger and the plant is considerably more forgiving, making it the go-to choice for aquascapers who want a carpet without fighting their tank constantly. It roots aggressively into fine-grained substrates, which helps it stay anchored better than many alternatives.

Medium light is the minimum to keep it compact and spreading horizontally. Without CO2 it can work, but growth slows dramatically and the carpet tends to stay patchy rather than filling in solidly. With CO2 and good nutrients it'll spread across a foreground in a matter of weeks.

Propagation is simple: just trim runners and press them into the substrate. Browsing scaped tanks on social media will show you how dramatic a fully established Monte Carlo carpet can look under quality lighting.

Care Notes

The most common mistake is planting it in clumps rather than separating stems and pressing them flat into the substrate individually. Dense clumping causes the lower stems to melt and rot. Without CO2, expect slow patchy growth rather than a dense carpet. Without adequate light, it grows upward reaching for the source instead of spreading laterally. High light combined with CO2 encourages compact, horizontal growth. Nutrient-rich capped substrate gives the best results.
