About

Dwarf Hairgrass originates from temperate and subtropical regions across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, where it grows in shallow, muddy shorelines and marshes.

In a tank it produces fine, bright green blades that rarely exceed 10 centimeters, creating that classic lawn effect most aquascapers are chasing when they first get serious about planted tanks. Spread happens through runners that creep horizontally across the substrate, slowly filling in gaps over several months.

Patience is mandatory here. It's not a fast carpeter, and without decent light and at least supplemental CO2, it tends to grow tall and sparse rather than low and dense. A nutrient-rich substrate makes a real difference since the plant feeds heavily through its roots. Plant in small plugs spaced a few centimeters apart to speed up coverage.

It works beautifully in nature aquascapes and Iwagumi layouts where that unbroken green lawn is the whole point. If you want to see what a mature stand actually looks like, browsing community tank journals is honestly the best way to calibrate your expectations before you start.

Care Notes

The most common mistake is planting it in low light and wondering why it grows upward instead of spreading. Algae is a real threat early on before the carpet fills in, especially thread algae that tangles through the blades and is a nightmare to remove. A fine-grained substrate like Aqua Soil helps enormously. CO2 injection isn't strictly required but makes the difference between a patchy lawn and a dense one.
