About

Trident Java Fern is a cultivar of Microsorum pteropus originating from Southeast Asia, selected and refined by aquatic plant enthusiasts for its striking, deeply divided leaf shape. Where a standard Java Fern has broad, paddle-like fronds, Trident produces narrow leaves that split into multiple pointed lobes near the tips, giving it an almost feathery, skeletal appearance. It stays noticeably more compact than typical Java Fern, rarely pushing past 15 to 20 cm, which makes it genuinely useful for nano setups and detailed aquascapes where you want texture without bulk.

Care is about as forgiving as it gets. Tie or glue the rhizome to driftwood, rock, or hardscape and let it do its thing. Low light is fine, CO2 is optional, and fertilizer demand is minimal. Never bury the rhizome in substrate or it'll rot out.

New plants emerge as tiny plantlets on older leaves, which you can detach once they develop a few roots of their own. If you want to see how good this plant can look in a well-built tank, hunting through aquascaping community builds is worth your time.

Care Notes

The single biggest mistake is burying the rhizome. It must stay exposed or it rots quickly. Browning leaves are usually a sign of too much direct flow hitting the plant or nutrient deficiency, not low light. Don't expect fast results since even healthy plants add just a few leaves per month. Black marks on leaves can indicate old age or algae, but aren't always cause for alarm.
