About
Flame Moss is a naturally occurring variant of Taxiphyllum thought to originate from Southeast Asia, though its exact wild source remains a bit murky. What sets it apart from other aquarium mosses is its growth direction: the stems twist and curl upward rather than sprawling outward, creating that distinctive layered, flickering silhouette that gives it the name. Attached to driftwood or stone, a well-grown clump really does look like frozen green flames.
It's slow, no getting around that, but the patience pays off in texture that few other plants can match. Care is forgiving enough for beginners. It'll grow without CO2 injection, though supplementing carbon does noticeably speed things up and tighten the growth pattern.
Good flow around the moss matters more than most people expect since it prevents debris from settling into the fronds and turning things brown. Trim outer portions periodically to stop the interior from dying off due to light deprivation.
It's a staple in competition aquascapes for good reason, but it looks just as striking in a simple iwagumi or a naturalistic bonsai driftwood setup. Browse community tank journals and you'll quickly see how versatile this moss really is.

Care Notes
The most common mistake is planting it directly in substrate, where it'll rot at the base. Tie or glue it to hardscape only. Poor water circulation is a silent killer, debris accumulation inside the clump causes dieback from the inside out. Without CO2, growth is very slow and the upward flame shape may be less pronounced. Avoid keeping it with goldfish, plecos, or any dedicated herbivores.
