About

Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Vietnam, Cryptocoryne balansae is one of the tallest crypts available to hobbyists. Its long, narrow leaves are distinctively bullated, meaning the leaf surface has a rippled, almost quilted texture that catches light and creates constant gentle movement even in low flow. Mature plants can push well past 40 cm, sometimes reaching 50 cm under good conditions, which makes them genuinely useful for filling background corners without resorting to fast-growing stems.

Unlike many crypts that prefer soft, acidic water, balansae actually does better with some hardness and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, so it's a surprisingly good fit for harder tap water setups.

New plants almost always go through crypt melt when introduced, dropping leaves before slowly pushing out fresh growth from the roots. Don't pull them out during this phase. Once established after several weeks, they become robust and will slowly multiply via runners. CO2 isn't required but speeds recovery and encourages denser, richer leaf color.

Browse planted tank communities and you'll find balansae used beautifully in Dutch-style and jungle aquascapes alike.

Care Notes

Crypt melt after planting is almost guaranteed, don't panic and pull the plant. Leave the roots undisturbed and new growth will follow. Avoid moving established plants repeatedly, as uprooting resets the establishment process. Nutrient-rich substrate makes a real difference here since it's a heavy root feeder. Harder water is a genuine benefit, not just tolerated.
