About
Native to tropical regions across Asia, Africa, and the Americas, Water Sprite is an aquatic fern that's earned a permanent spot in the hobby for good reason. It comes in two main forms depending on conditions: when rooted in substrate it grows upright with finely divided, lacy fronds that fan out beautifully in the background or midground, and when left floating it spreads across the surface with a softer, more delicate appearance.
Either way, it grows fast. Really fast. In a tank with decent light and nutrients, you'll be trimming or thinning it weekly. That rapid growth is actually one of its biggest selling points because it outcompetes algae by pulling nitrogen and phosphate out of the water column aggressively. New plants propagate by sprouting adventitious plantlets directly on the fronds, which eventually break off and either float away or can be gently separated and replanted.
Floating mats are a go-to for livebearers and any fish breeding setup since fry absolutely hide in the root tangle underneath.
If you want a plant that does real work in your tank while looking genuinely attractive, Water Sprite is hard to beat. Browse planted tank journals and you'll see it turning up in everything from heavily planted Dutch-style builds to simple betta tanks.

Care Notes
The most common mistake is not thinning it often enough. Shading lower portions of the plant causes melt from the base up, and it can block light from everything beneath it when floating. Hard water can slow growth noticeably. Don't bury the rhizome or the base will rot. It's sensitive to copper, so avoid any medications or fertilizers containing it.
