About

Native to blackwater and clearwater rivers across South America, Tonina fluviatilis is one of those plants that serious planted tank enthusiasts obsess over. It grows in tight whorls of narrow, feathery leaves arranged in a star-like pattern around each stem node, which gives it a texture and silhouette you simply won't find in any other aquatic plant. The overall effect, especially in a dense group, is almost otherworldly. It stays relatively compact as stem plants go, making it a strong candidate for background placement in larger aquascapes.

Growth is slow even under good conditions, so patience is essential. This is not a plant you can drop into a community tank and expect to survive. It demands genuinely soft, acidic water, preferably in the pH 5 to 6 range, and will melt or stagnate in anything harder than 4 dGH. CO2 injection and strong lighting are non-negotiable.

Propagation is done by trimming healthy side shoots and replanting them. Watching it thrive in a well-tuned blackwater scape is genuinely rewarding, and there are some stunning builds featuring this plant worth seeking out if you want inspiration.

Care Notes

The most common mistake is attempting Tonina in moderately hard tap water. Even brief exposure to higher GH will cause rapid deterioration. Use RO or rainwater and keep hardness near zero. Nutrient deficiencies show up quickly in slow growth and yellowing tips. Dose micros consistently and maintain high light intensity throughout the water column. Iron levels deserve particular attention.
