About

Native to Southeast Asia, Hygrophila polysperma has been in the hobby for decades and has earned a reputation as one of the most forgiving stem plants you can grow. It's a popular starting point for newcomers partly because it'll grow under almost any conditions, including low light, no CO2, and a wide range of water parameters.

Leaves are oval and arranged in pairs along the stem, typically pale to mid green, though higher light will push them toward yellowish or pinkish tones. The 'Rosanervig' cultivar, sometimes called Sunset Hygro, develops striking pink veining that makes it genuinely eye-catching.

Growth is fast enough that you'll be trimming regularly, which is something to keep in mind before planting a full row of it. Because of how aggressively it reproduces and spreads, it's actually banned or restricted for sale in several US states due to invasive risk in natural waterways.

Plant it in groups toward the back of the tank, let it fill in, and trim cuttings can simply be replanted to propagate. It's a workhorse plant, not flashy on its own, but it fills space fast and helps keep nutrients in check. Worth searching community tank builds from the mid-2000s to see how widely it was used.

Care Notes

The biggest mistake is letting it go too long between trims. Once it reaches the surface it shades out lower plants aggressively. Replant trimmed tops straight into the substrate and they'll root without any fuss. In very soft, acidic water it may melt briefly before adapting. Don't dispose of cuttings in natural waterways as it's considered invasive outdoors in warmer climates.
