About

A cultivar of Alternanthera reineckii selected for its compact, low-growing habit, this plant originates from the same South American lineage as the standard form but stays noticeably shorter and denser. The leaves are a deep pink to burgundy-red, depending heavily on light intensity and available nutrients.

Under high light with CO2 and a rich substrate, the coloration can be genuinely striking. Without those conditions, it tends to go greenish and stretch upward, losing most of what makes it appealing. Growth is slow even by stem plant standards, so patience is required.

It's used mainly as a foreground accent or, when trimmed regularly and planted in a dense cluster, it can build toward something resembling a low red carpet. Propagation is straightforward: trim the tops and replant them. The cuttings root without much fuss in a nutrient-rich substrate.

Pair it with green foreground plants like Glossostigma or Monte Carlo and the contrast is genuinely eye-catching. Searching planted tank forums and aquascaping build threads will show you just how much impact a well-grown patch of this plant can have in a layout.

Care Notes

The most common mistake is running it under medium light and no CO2, then wondering why it's turning green and leggy. It needs strong light and regular fertilization to hold its red color. Deficiencies in iron and potassium show up fast on the leaves. Trim frequently to encourage lateral growth and keep it compact. Replant trimmings immediately rather than letting them float, as they root best when planted promptly.
